Just as you would insure your home, car or business, it’s also important to insure your church or other place of worship. Churches have many of the same risks as businesses, along with a few unique risks such as theft of antique artifacts. When shopping for church insurance, make sure the policy you select includes the following coverages:
-
Property: Covers the building(s) on the property, along with the assets inside including furniture, prayer books, artwork, etc. This policy protects against losses from fire, tornadoes, severe weather, theft and vandalism. It’s also recommended that you purchase a rider or separate policy for equipment breakdown to protect your mechanical and electrical systems, including computers and appliances.
-
General liability: Covers third parties who suffer bodily injury or property damage as a result of unsafe church grounds or due to the actions of employees. This includes claims of libel/slander and sexual misconduct. Some policies will include medical expenses coverage to pay for the treatment of injured third parties.
-
Professional liability: Covers third parties from misguidance and similar claims of errors and omissions. Just like a doctor is responsible for the safe treatment of patients, so too are clergy responsible for their congregants’ ability to seek and practice faith in a safe environment.
-
Umbrella liability: Covers extremely high expenses that exceed policy limits by adding another layer of coverage on top of other policies.
-
Inland marine: Covers valuable, rare and antique possessions, such as a stained glass window or century-old sculpture.
-
Commercial auto: Covers vehicles similarly to the coverage offered by your personal auto insurance policy. If the church does not own, lease or rent vehicles but employees drive their personal vehicles on church business, you can purchase a hired and non-owned auto liability policy for extended coverage on these vehicles without overlapping coverage.
-
Worker’s compensation: Covers the medical expenses and lost wages of employees who get injured on the job.
